Ok, in one of my Linkedin posts I advised new or aspiring Tamil translators to keep Translation as only as their secondary income if they have passion, and not to get into this field at all if they have no passion for the language.
Let me eloberate on it a bit.
This is what happens, a vendor decides to get translation done by a client and they select the cheapest quoted client from a bunch of clients that gave their quotes.
The cheapest vendor happens to be a new start up, or on worse case scenario is an individual without a registered company.
Since the client agreed to provide translation for the cheapest rate they ask translator's to register with them, those 'interested' comment guys.
An experienced translator would normally charge Rs.1 per word in India on an average. But there are a bunch of guys who are ready to do the same work for '20 paise', so obviousely the client wants to cut down on pay, so selects the cheap guys.
A bulk amount of work is given by the vendor to the client, and from the client to the Freelancers. Now, the freelancer is hardly making a living by doing small projects, so they want to do huge work in short time, say 10,000 words in a day.
Now, the freelancer wants to speeden up the work, so they go to Machine translation or AI chatbots.
AI or machine does not understand human language, so it gives results nased on its learnings. Which the freelancer shamelessly copies and gives it to the client. And the client does not give any feedback till the payment day, which is 45 days from date of invoice which is the last day of the month in which the work was carried out and completed.
The client thinks that they can cheat the freelancer by saying they have provided bad quality. And decides to pay only one or two freelancers among the whole bunch.
Now comes the vendor, who does not know your language, compares the translation provided by the client with machine translation, and immediately comes to conclusion none of the translations are worthy enough to pass the quality assurance.
End of the day, all work but no joy.
Tell me, how would you solve the issue?
